Ocean Athletes at Fraser Valley High School Championships

Ocean Athletes had strong performances at Fraser Valley 
High School Cross Country Championships on Wednesday.

The day started off on an exciting note with a dash to finish for the top 3
Grade 8 girls - all within 1 second of each other.  Carla Vicic finished 2nd
and Hayley Pederson (Club Executive member Gord Pederson's daughter) was
close in 4th.  Emma Scott ran valiantly with a very painful ankle to score
as the 5th and deciding runner to give Semiahmoo the Grade 8 Girls Fraser
Valley title.  Joe Walkow, an Ocean Athletics sprinter finished 23rd in the 

grade 8 boys race.

The Junior Girls race saw more strong club performances with Yolande
Dykstra-Santos finishing 3rd and Erin Slade 5th, Marina Buccini 33, Robyn
Venema 46, Shannon Butler 48, and Leanne Butler 53.  Yolande and Erin's
performances qualified them to compete at the BC High School Championships
in Victoria November 3.

Dennis Brown ran an exceptional race to place second in the Junior Boys race
in his first year in that category. Dennis also qualified for the BC HS
Championships.  
Sam Walkow dominated the Senior Girls race from the gun to take the FV
title.   Semiahmoo and Ocean teammates Cassidy Scott (23) and Jacquie
deLeeuw (43) helped Semiahmoo to take the Senior Girls FV title and earn the
right to represent the FV at the upcoming BC HS championships.  Ocean Athletics 

heptathlete Alanna Paterson finished 34th and qualified to the BC Championships as well.
The final race of the day was probably the most anticipated match up of the
meet with Luc Bruchet going up against race favourite Jamie Clark from
Maple Ridge.  The two ran side by side for the entire course until Jamie took
a slight lead down the finish straight.  Luc surged back to overtake Jamie
in the last 10 strides!  Well done Luc.  The Senior Boys race also had
strong performances by David Slade (13), Michael Butler (24), Jake Bruchet
(39) and Steven Thatcher (41).   All are off to the BC Championships Nov 3.

Good luck to all of our Ocean athletes at both the upcoming club
championships on Saturday, October 27 and the BC HS Championships on
November 3 in Victoria.
